The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) is the senior line infantry regiment and only Scottish line infantry regiment of the British Army. Formed on 28 March 2006 and founded on the fighting heritage of historic Scottish Infantry Regiments. His Majesty The King is the Regiment’s Colonel in Chief and their motto is ‘Nemo Me Impune Lacessit’ (No one provokes me with impunity.
Today the Royal Regiment of Scotland consists of three regular and two reserve battalions, plus an incremental company. The Regimental Headquarters are located in Edinburgh Castle.

Regular Battalions

2 SCOTS - 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. A light role battalion based in Penicuik, Midlothian.

3 SCOTS - 3rd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. A light role battalion based in Fort George, Inverness.

4 SCOTS - 4th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. A light protected mobility battalion based in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

BKA Coy, 5 SCOTS - Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. An independent rifle company based in Edinburgh.

Reserve Battalions

6 SCOTS - 6th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. A light role reserve battalion with its headquarters based in Glasgow.

7 SCOTS - 7th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. A light role reserve battalion with its headquarters based in Perth.
The 1st December 2021 saw the re-designation of 1 SCOTS to become 1st Battalion The Ranger Regiment (1 RANGER). 1 SCOTS were part of the Specialised Infantry Group, and all the units in the Group have become battalions within the new Army Special Operations Brigade.

Since its formation the regiment has deployed to almost every theatre of operations the British Army has been involved in; conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Northern Ireland, supporting peace operations in Cyprus, West and North Africa and giving support to UK Civil Authorities to deal with flooding, storm damage and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Young Officers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland are trained during a 12-month arduous training package at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the soldiers (known as Jocks) do their training (6 months) at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick. There are several specialised skills within the infantry –, Commander, Gunner, Rifleman/Sniper, Team Medic, Driver, Physical Training Instructor (PTI)and Musician.

Additional Information
The Regimental Mascot, Corporal Cruachan IV, is a Shetland pony who took up his role in October 2012.
Following the re-designation of 1 SCOTS the black hackle became the Regimental hackle and is now worn by all SCOTS officers and soldiers except for those assigned to a Regular Battalion or Balaklava Company.

Those assigned to a Regular Battalion or Balaklava Company wear the following coloured hackles.
